Bridge for A Cause – March 30th, 2017
As part of its ‘Holiday Inn – Dubai Loves You’ Campaign, Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha hosted a Bridge tournament on March 29th in collaboration with the Canadian Bridge Club to raise funds for the United Nations World Food Programme. Players of all nationalities participated in the Duplicate Bridge tournament titled, ‘Bridge for a Cause’, with tournament directors Waleed Elmanyawi and Tarek Ahmed flying in from Egypt to lend their support. Well-known Bridge champion such as Munir Attaullah from UK was amongst the players, adding an edge to the keen competition.
Besides offering the venue, Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha also provided a sumptuous brunch and donated the prizes for the winners, ensuring that all the proceeds from the tournament could go to the UN WFP for helping those in need of emergency food. Roxana Jaffer CEO, of Sovereign Hotels Dubai | Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha welcomed the participants and thanked the Canadian bridge Club and all the players for supporting this noble cause, stating: ‘’Today we will be helping Union Global Compact (UNGC) furthering one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) eradicate hunger in the world.’’ The event ended with the knowledge that the participants had helped to feed 16,400 hungry children in the world.
The morning began with the screening of a video, showing the terrible situation in some areas where the WFP is working to provide food to severely malnourished children and adults. The heart rendering film strengthened the resolve of the players to continue supporting this cause.
The ‘The ‘Holiday Inn- Dubai Loves You’ Campaign was launched in 2008 with the mission statement ‘Life is not worth living unless it is lived for someone else’. The campaign is dedicated to building a successful and self-sustaining civil society in the UAE, while also reaching out to victims of environmental calamities or political and economic crises across the world.
Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha has been an official partner of the United Nations World Food Programme since December 2013. The funds it has raised so far for the UN WFP through the continued efforts of its staff, and annual events such as Bridge for a Cause, have helped to make a difference in the lives of over 440,776 needy people across the globe by supporting efforts such as emergency food distribution to Syrian refugees, distribution of high energy biscuits to victims of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and provision of school meals to underprivileged children
in several countries.
