14 April 2014 | Dubai

Dubai-the dream city basking under the glory of its world famous driverless metro service also takes pride in its Air Conditioned bus Stops. Dotting the entire cityscape of Dubai, the bus stops are like an oasis for bus travelers. Mitigating the discomfort of passengers waiting to board buses at various locations, these stops are a great incentive to use public transport; decongesting the roads.

Phased Roll Out

Dubai started rolling out the air-conditioned bus stops in 2007 and today the total number exceeds a thousand. The $20 million project has been implemented by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) with Right Angle Media as its technology provider. Described as the largest public-private utility initiative that ran for more than ten years on a design-build-operate-transfer (DBOT) basis, the AC bus stops have many attractive features to flaunt.

The AC bus shelters are not only ergonomically designed, but also offer high level comfort for commuters. They are backed by an array of amenities for commuters to stay cool even in the scorching heat of summer.

Every shelter with a unique crescent design has reasonable space to accommodate a good amount of people. There are panels for advertising and information, vending machines for snacks, ATMs and recyclable garbage containers. The passengers are updated with the latest communication so they are in the loop regarding incoming buses and their routes.
