Foundation of UAE
In 1971, the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Fujairah and (one year later) Ras al Khaimah came together to form the federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Federation
UAE is a proud sovereign state of 83,600 square kilometers and a small population, which has subsequently grown to close to five million people today, as well as business and leisure travelers visiting hotels in Dubai al Barsha.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the most important emirates in the federation and complement each other. Abu Dhabi is the seat of the federal and a major oil industry centre, while Dubai is the main commercial centre, with trading and business ties extended beyond the Middle East to all corners of the world.
City of Merchants
Through its growing trade activities, Dubai became the principle port of the Gulf coast by the late 1870s. Traders from Iran, India and elsewhere around the region were attracted to the growing hub of commerce and, by the turn of the century, Dubai was reputed to have the largest souqs in the region. Pearls continued to be a mainstay of the emirate’s prosperity until the 1940s.
City of Gold
Dubai gold souq is famous the world over for its low prices and sheer variety.
Tourism and Development
Tourist experience unlimited sun, sand, sports and shopping in the UAE along with friendly and generous people helping to make your stay unforgettable. With a booming economy, where trade and tourism are encouraged, Dubai is the ultimate shopping destination. Its state of the art tourist infrastructure with numerous world class hotels, sports events and shopping spectaculars held annually, ensures its position as the Middle East’s number one tourist destination. Hotels near Al Quoz provide fast access to the industrial areas for business travelers.
Coat of Arms
On March 22, 2008, the coat of arms was modified. The main change was that the Arab sailboat was replaced by the UAE flag and seven stars representing the seven Emirates of the federation.
Flag Colors
The United Arab Emirates Flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of green (top), shite, and black with a wider vertical red band on the hoist side. This flag can be found flying outside hotels in Dubai Al Barsha, including the Holiday Inn.
According to Ancient and Heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with colors. The colors on the UAE represent the following:
White – peace and honesty
Red – hardiness, bravery, strength and valor
Green – hope, joy and love
Black – the defeat of enemies or determination
The flag of the United Arab Emirates was adopted on December 2, 1971.
Climate
The climate in Dubai is sub-tropical and arid, or desert like. The city enjoys almost year round sunny blue skies. Rain is infrequent and when it falls, it happens in winter.
Temperatures range from lows of 10°C to extreme summer highs of 48°C. The average maximum daily temperature in January is 24°C and the average maximum daily temperature in July is 41°C when humidity is very high.
Currency
Dubai currency is known as the Arab Emirate Dirham in the global market and is denoted by AED. Locally, the Dubai currency is denoted by ‘Dh’ and called Dirham. Each Dirham is divided into 100 units, known as fil. The International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Right regulates the currency of Dubai, which manages the valuation of the Dirham in the global market.
The Dubai currency has maintained a constant rate with the US Dollar since 1980. One US Dollar is equivalent to Dh 3.67 in the global valuation.
The denominations available for the paper notes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 100 Dirham and the available denominations of the coins are 1 Dirham alongside 5, 10, 25 and 50 fills. Dubai currency can be exchanged with currencies of other parts of the world in banks and exchange houses.
